Earth Mother

Do what you can.
No, it won’t feel enough.
But every small act is a thank you.
Act not out of guilt over what we’ve done,
But in love for our Earth,
The Mother of all.
So generous she’s been
with her bountiful love.
Giving in selfless abandon.
Birthing us all just to watch us destroy her.
Bleeding and dying right under our feet.

We’ve cut the cord with our wireless lives.
Connection severed,
heartbeats no longer shared.
But if you listen for hers,
It’s pounding still.
Under concrete and stop signs, buildings and roads.
Buried deep but never ceasing.
Calling to us in the rhythm of days.
As the seasons turn before our blind eyes.

‘Save me and I can save you’, she cries.
Whilst we poison our milk and burn our beds.
And she howls and paces outside in the dark.
She’ll tear down our homes with the force of her love.
How can we be deaf to the sound of her longing?
How can we ignore the signs we all see.

We’re made of the same, our Mother and us.
Of planets and stars and abundance and love.
Unseen in our wars with other and self.
Tied in knots of hatred, greed, damage and fear.
When the truth is so simple but just out of sight.
We’re in this together, prodigals all.

We share just one Mother,
And she’s waiting for us.
She’ll rush in with soil and water and air.
Because all that she has is already ours.
To treasure and hold and protect
through our lives.
So we’ll do what we can and hope it’s enough.
Matching her love with our own.
And connect once again, united in care,
For our Mother, this planet, our home.
